Use the 5-way controller to highlight “Shop in Kindle Store” and press the
5-way controller to select it. The Kindle Storefront will appear.
Use the 5-way controller to select a content category such as Books or
Kindle Top Sellers, or begin typing on the keyboard and select “search store”
to search for a specific book.
Select a book to view it s product detail page. Use the 5-way controller
to highlight and select “ Buy,” and when the book has arrived on your Kindle,
an "items downloaded" message will appear at the top of the screen.
Press the Home button, locate the downloaded book at the top of the
display, and use the 5-way controller to select the book.
Your book will open to the location the publisher considers the beginning
(usually the first chapter), and you can begin reading.
The Kindle Store is the place to purchase your Kindle books, newspapers, magazines,
and blogs. To access the Kindle Store, follow these steps:
Enter the e-mail address and password associated with your Amazon account
into the text entry box. To enter a number, hold down the ALT key and press the
appropriate letter at the top of the keyboard to select the desired number.
Move the 5-way controller down to highlight “submit,” then press the 5-way
controller to complete your registration. Your registration information will
appear on your Kindle.
Press the Home button to exit this page.
Press the Home button and then press the Menu button.
Navigate down to “Settings” by moving the 5-way controller down, then press
the 5-way controller to select.
Select “register” using the 5-way controller.
If your Kindle was a gift or is not preregistered, you will need to register your device
to make purchases on the Kindle Store and take advantage of other Amazon services
such as e-mailing personal documents to your Kindle. If you purchased this Kindle for
yourself, you do not need to register and may skip this section.
Adjusts the font size and number of words per line to suit your
reading preference. Also allows you to turn on/off Text-to-Speech
and to change the screen rotation behavior.
Retraces your steps on your Kindle.
Goes back one page in your reading material.
Turns the page in your reading material.
Accesses the Kindle Store as well as ac tions such as tur ning the
wireless on/off or adding a highlight within a book.
Shows content stored on your Kindle as well as content
archived at Amazon.
Moves the on-screen cursor up and down or side to side.
Selects an item or action when pressed.
Powers on, sleeps, or wakes the device when quickly slid and
released. Turns off the device when slid and held for 4 seconds.
Power on the device by sliding and releasing the power switch. After the Kindle
start s up, the Kindle DX User’s Guide will open automatically to help familiarize you
with your Kindle’s capabilities.

The charge indicator light will turn yellow indicating that the battery is charging;
you can continue to use your Kindle while it charges. A green light indicates that the
battery is fully charged.

The Device a nd Related Serv ices. The Kindle D evice (the
“Device”) is a p ortable electro nic reading device that ut ilizes
wireless con nectivity to enabl e users to shop for, download,
browse, and rea d books, newspap ers, magazines, blog s,
and other mate rials, all subject to th e terms and condition s
of this Agreem ent. The “Ser vice” means the wireles s
connecti vity, provision of digital co ntent, software a nd
support , and other servic es and support that A mazon
provides Devi ce users.
Wireless Conn ectivity
General . Amazon provides w ireless connectiv ity free
of charge to you for cer tain content shopp ing and
downloading s ervices on your Dev ice. You may be charged
a fee for wireles s connectivity for yo ur use of other
wireless ser vices on your Device , such as Web browsing
and download ing of personal files, s hould you elect to use
those ser vices. We will maintain a l ist of current fees for
such serv ices in the Kindle Store. A mazon reserves th e
right to discont inue wireless connec tivity at any time or to
otherwi se change the terms for wi reless connectivi ty at
any time, inclu ding, but not limited to (a) limit ing the
number and si ze of data files that may be tra nsferred using
wireless con nectivity and (b) cha nging the amount and
terms appli cable for wireless conn ectivity charge s.
Coverage and Se rvice Interr uptions. You acknow ledge
that if your Devi ce is located in any area with out applicable
wireless con nectivity, you may not be a ble to use some or
all element s of the wireless serv ices. We are not
responsibl e for the unavailabilit y of wireless servi ce or any
interrupti ons of wireless connec tivity.
Your Conduct . You agree you will use the wire less
connecti vity provided by Amaz on only in connection w ith
Service s Amazon provides for th e Device. You may not use
the wireless co nnectivity for a ny other purpose.
Digital Content
The Kindle Store. The Kindle Store enables you to download,
display and use on your Device a variety of digitized electronic
content, such as books, subscriptions to magazines,
newspapers, journals and other periodicals, blogs, RSS feeds,
and other digital content, as determined by Amazon from
time to time (individually and collectively, “Digital Content”).
Use of Digita l Content. Upon you r payment of the
applicable f ees set by Amazon, Ama zon grants you the
non-excl usive right to keep a perma nent copy of the
applicable D igital Content and to view, use , and display
such Digital Co ntent an unlimited numb er of times, solely
on the Device or a s authorized by Amaz on as part of the
Service a nd solely for your person al, non-comme rcial
use. Digital Co ntent will be deemed lic ensed to you by
Amazon und er this Agreement un less otherwise ex pressly
provided by Ama zon.
Restrict ions. Unless spe cifically indicated ot herwise, you
may not sell, ren t, lease, distribute, b roadcast, sublice nse
or otherw ise assign any rights to t he Digital Content
or any porti on of it to any third party, an d you may not
remove any prop rietary notices or l abels on the Digital
Content. In ad dition, you may not, and yo u will not
encourage, a ssist or authorize any o ther person to, bypass ,
modify, defeat o r circumvent securit y features that protect
the Digital Con tent.
Subscri ptions. The followi ng applies with respe ct to
Digital Conten t made available to you on a sub scription
basis, inclu ding, but not limited to, ele ctronic newspape rs,
magazines , journals and othe r periodicals (collec tively,
“Periodic als”): (i) you may reque st cancellation of your
subscripti on by following the cancell ation instructio ns
in the Kindle Stor e; (ii) we may terminate a subscr iption at
our discretio n without notice, for exa mple, if a Periodical
is no longer avail able; (iii) if we terminate a sub scription in
advance of the e nd of its term, we will give yo u a prorated
refund; (iv) we res erve the right to chang e subscription
terms and fee s from time to time, effec tive as of the
beginning of th e next term; and (v) taxe s may apply to
subscripti on fees and will be added i f applicable.
Software
Definiti ons. The following te rms apply to the Device an d to
(a) all software (an d the media on which such s oftware is
distribute d) of Amazon or third par ties that is pre-in stalled
on the Device at t ime of purchase or that Am azon provides
as updates/upg rades to the pre-ins talled software
(collectively, the “ Device Softwar e”), unless you agree to
other terms as p art of an update/upgr ade process; and (b)
any printed, o n-line or other elec tronic documentat ion for
such soft ware (the “Document ation”). As used in this
Agreement , “Software” mea ns, collectively, the Dev ice
Softwar e and Documentation .
Use of the Devi ce Software. You may us e the Device
Softwar e only on the Device. You may not se parate any
individual co mponent of the Device S oftware for use on
another devi ce or computer, may not transfe r it for use
on another de vice or use it, or any por tion of it, over a
network an d may not sell, rent, leas e, lend, distribute or
sublicense o r otherwise assig n any rights to the Soft ware
in whole or in pa rt.
No Reverse Eng ineering, De compilation, D isassembly
or Circumven tion. You may not, and you wi ll not
encourage, a ssist or authorize any o ther person to, modif y,
reverse engin eer, decompile or disasse mble the Device
or the Soft ware, whether in who le or in part, create
any derivati ve works from or of the Sof tware, or bypass ,
modify, defeat o r tamper with or circumv ent any of the
function s or protections of the Dev ice or Software or an y
mechanism s operatively linked to th e Software, includi ng,
but not limited to, a ugmenting or substitu ting any digital
rights mana gement functiona lity of the Device or Sof tware.
Automatic U pdates. In order to kee p your Software
up-to-d ate, Amazon may automati cally provide your
Device with up dates/upgrades to the Sof tware.
Export R egulations. You agree to c omply with all expor t
and re-ex port restrict ions and regulations of t he
Depart ment of Commerce and othe r United States
agencies and a uthorities, and no t to transfer, or encourage,
assist or auth orize the transfer of t he Software to a
prohibited cou ntry or otherw ise in violation of any suc h
restrict ions or regulations.
Governme nt End Users. The S oftware is a “Comme rcial
item” as that term i s defined at 48 C.F.R . § 2.101, consisting
of “Commercial C omputer Softwar e” and “Commercial
Computer Sof tware Document ation,” as such terms are
used in 48 C .F.R. §12.212 or 48 C .F.R. § 227.7202, as
applicable . Consistent with thes e provisions, the Sof tware
is being licens ed to U.S. Governme nt end users (a) only as
a Commercial ite m and (b) with only those rig hts as are
granted to all oth er end users pursuan t to the terms and
conditions of t his Agreement.
General
No Illegal Us e and Reservatio n of Rights. You may not
use the Device , the Service or the Di gital Content for any
illegal purpo se. You acknowledge that th e sale of the
Device to you doe s not transfer to you title to or ow nership
of any intellect ual property rig hts of Amazon or its
suppliers . All of the Software i s licensed, not sold, an d such
license is non -exclusive.
Informat ion Received. The D evice Software wi ll provide
Amazon wit h data about your Device an d its interaction
with the Ser vice (such as available m emory, up-time, log
files and signa l strength) and inform ation related to the
content on your D evice and your use of it (such as
automatic boo kmarking of the last p age read and content
deletions fro m the Device). Annotatio ns, bookmarks ,
notes, highli ghts, or similar mar kings you make in your
Device are bac ked up by the Service and I nformation we
receive is subje ct to the Amazon.com Pr ivacy Notice.
Patents. T he Device and/or metho ds used in association
with the Devic e may be covered by one or more pa tents
or pending pa tent applications.
Changes to Se rvice. Amazon r eserves the right to
modify, susp end, or discontinue th e Service at any time,
and Amazon w ill not be liable to you should i t exercise
such right.
Termination. Your rights under this Agreement will
automatically terminate without notice from Amazon if you
fail t o comply with any term of this Agreement. In case
of such termination, you must cease all use of the Software
and Amazon may immediately revoke your access to the
Service or to Digital Content without notice to you and
without refund of any fees. Amazon’s failure to insist upon or
enforce your strict compliance with this Agreement will not
constitute a waiver of any of its rights.
Disclaim er of Warranties . YOU EXPRESSLY ACKNOWL-
EDGE AND AGR EE THAT USE OF THE SERVI CE, DEVICE,
DIGITAL CONT ENT AND SOFT WARE IS AT YOUR SOLE
RISK. EXC EPT FOR THE ONE-YEA R LIMITED WARR ANTY,

SUBMIT TED TO CONFIDENT IAL ARBITR ATION IN
SEATTLE , WASHINGTON, EXC EPT THAT, TO THE
EXTEN T YOU HAVE IN ANY MANN ER VIOLATED OR
THREATEN ED TO VIOLATE AMAZO N’S INTELLEC TUAL
PROPERTY RI GHTS, AMAZON M AY SEEK INJUNCTI VE
OR OTHER APPRO PRIATE RELIEF IN ANY S TATE OR
FEDERAL CO URT IN THE STATE OF WASHI NGTON,
AND YOU CONSEN T TO EXCLUSIVE JURI SDICTION
AND VENU E IN SUCH COURTS. Th e arbitrator’s award
shall be bindi ng and may be entered as a judg ment in any
court of comp etent jurisdiction . To the fullest extent
permitte d by applicable law, no arbit ration under this
Agreemen t shall be joined to an arbitration involving any
other party subject to this Agreement, whether through class
arbitration proceedings or otherwise.
Severabil ity. If any term or conditi on of this Agreement
shall be deem ed invalid, void, or for any re ason
unenforceabl e, that part shall be de emed severable and
shall not affe ct the validity and e nforceability of any
remaining ter m or condition.
Amendm ent. Amazon rese rves the right to ame nd any
of the terms of thi s Agreement at its so le discretion by
posting the rev ised terms on the Kind le Store or the
Amazon.co m website. Your continued use of t he Device
and Softw are after the effec tive date of any such
amendmen t shall be deemed your ag reement to be bound
by such amend ment.

ONE-YEAR LI MITED WARRANT Y
This Warran ty is provided by Amazo n Fulfillment Serv ices,
Inc., 1200 1 2th Ave South, Suite 1200, S eattle, WA
98144-2 734, United States, for t he Kindle Device
(the “Device” ).
We warrant the D evice against defect s in materials and
workmansh ip under ordinary c onsumer use for one year
from the date of or iginal retail purchase . During this
warrant y period, if a defect ar ises in the Device, and yo u
follow the instr uctions for returni ng the Device, we will, at
our option and to t he extent permit ted by law, either (i)
repair the Dev ice using either new or ref urbished part s, (ii)
replace the D evice with a new or refurbi shed Device, or (iii)
refund to you all or p art of the purchase pr ice of the Device.
This limited w arranty applie s to any repair, replacement
part or rep lacement Device for th e remainder of the
original wa rranty period or fo r ninety days, which ever
period is long er. All replaced parts a nd Devices for which
a refund is given s hall become our prope rty. This limited
warrant y applies only to hardwa re components of the
